With the current heatwave pushing much of Kyrgyzstan past +35°C, Lake Issyk-Kul remains one of the most popular escapes — and this week's conditions make it an especially good time to go. Daytime air along the lake's coast is running near +27°C, while the water itself is warm enough for a comfortable swim.
Water Warm Enough Across the Coast
By mid-August, the lake's surface typically warms to around +20°C to +24°C, with the warmest water usually found on the northern shore near Cholpon-Ata and Bosteri, and slightly cooler conditions toward Kadzhi-Sai on the southern shore. That's comfortably warm enough for swimming, and gentle enough that families with small children commonly use the lake's shallow bays.
Mostly Calm, With a Few Rain Days
August is typically one of the wetter months at the lake, so scattered showers can interrupt an otherwise sunny stretch. Wind is usually light this time of year, but Issyk-Kul is occasionally hit by a strong local wind known as the "ulan," so it's worth checking conditions before heading far from shore or renting water sports equipment.
Best Time to Go
The swimming season on Issyk-Kul typically runs from late June through the end of August, and mid-August still offers close to the warmest water of the year. With cooler autumn air arriving by September, this week is one of the last strong windows for a lakeside trip before the season winds down.
